RANGE magazine’s hardcover book, “The Good, the Bad & the Bovine,” received a coveted 2018 Will Rogers Gold Medallion in the Photographic Essays category and a second Gold Medallion for Outstanding Merit/Excellence in Printing and Publication. The honors were conveyed on October 27, in Fort Worth, Texas. C.J. Hadley, RANGE magazine publisher, was named for her role as publisher/editor of the book. The Range Conservation Foundation helped fund the book.

There’s a lot of red meat and gorgeous photos in “The Good, the Bad & the Bovine.” It all started with the ancient aurochs, prehistoric ancestor of Longhorn, Zebu and Hereford. Man’s evolution as a caretaker, as a steward of the land, is inextricably woven with the evolution of these elegant and often-maligned four-legged creatures. The part cattle play in maintaining the health of the landscape in partnership with man is imperfectly understood by the world at large. RANGE magazine has, for the last quarter century, sought to advocate for cows, the people who care for them in the mountains and grasslands of the American West, and the health of the wild-open spaces we all share. As urban America gets further and further from an understanding of the natural world, RANGE brings you regular dispatches from the empty quarter, notes from those who live in the outback, and their images of rural experience, keeping our readers in touch with it all—the good, the bad, and the bovine.

The Will Rogers Medallion Awards honors those books that represent an Outstanding Achievement in the publishing of Western Media, according to WRMA’s executive director Charles Williams.
“Your book exemplifies the combination of excellent content, high production values and honoring of the cowboy heritage that the award was created to acknowledge,” he says. “As you know, Will Rogers was a respected writer as well as a cowboy entertainer. We hope and believe that the Will Rogers Medallion Awards help expand the heritage of literature that honors the traditions and values of the American cowboy, which Will did so much to embody and demonstrate. You can be justly proud of your entry.
